Gonococcal arthritis

- commonest cause of septic arthritis in previously young fit adult
- more common in females and homosexual men
- presents with fever, characteristic rash/pustules, polyarthralgia and tenosynovitis, followed by large joint monoarticular arthritis.
- treatment: IV ceftriaxone, examination of joint and washout under anaesthesia

  1. How come gonococcus is gran negative intracellular diplococci treated w penicillin???

  2. Neisseria gonorrhea has cell wall. Penicillin inhibits cell wall synthesis. In view of resistance, ceftriaxone is currently used for treatment.
